Children's Mental Health & Terrorism

As our country pulls together its resources to cope with the results of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, war and natural disasters, it is critically important to remember the emotional well-being of families, especially our young ones.

Exposure to the terrible images reproduced by the media’s coverage of the events can cause powerful emotional responses in both children and adults.  It is natural to feel deep sadness, confusion, anger, powerlessness, anxiety or fear. It is important to acknowledge these feelings and talk about them.

The Mental Hygiene Administration offers a toll-free crisis hotline number, (the Maryland Youth Crisis Hotline), which young people or their families can call at any hour if they want to speak with a counselor. The number is 1-800-422-0009. In addition, there are a number of available resources, which provide information for parents on the importance of listening to and talking with their children about these events and how to handle questions and concerns, which may arise.
